Bay Area Fun for Kids this weekend: STEM, Lions, and Guinea Pigs!

¡Descubra! Chabot Space & Science Center is presenting a family event to demonstrate science, tech, engineering and math in an engaging way this Saturday. The ¡Descubra! event, in partnership with the Smithsonian Latino Center, will feature Latino STEM experts to serve as role models, as showing off potential career paths and new areas of interest. There will be hands-on activities, workshops, and interactive presentations. The event is included with admission, and families are invited to donate a Spanish-language book aimed at ages 1-5 in exchange for $2 off admission.

World Lion Day! Go deeper into the lives of lions (while keeping a safe distance, of course) during the World Lion Day celebration this Saturday at the Oakland Zoo. There will be something for all ages, from face painting to art projects to learning more about California mountian lions, the Uganda Carnivore Program, Ewaso Lions in Kenya, and the movement encouraging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to fast-track a listing of the African lion under the Endangered Species Act. The event is Saturday from 1- a.m. to 3 p.m. and is included with admission.

Guinea Pignic! The Marin Humane Society is hosting Pignic for guinea pigs and their fans this Saturday. Bring your guinea pig and lunch to this unique pignic featuring a costume contest, a vegetable contest, health checks, grooming tips, and more. There are rules from the Humane Society, which are worth noting: Pigs only, no other other furry friends, including cats and dogs. They don’t want someone’s doggy making a snack out of another person’s piggy; remember to bring some sort of shade you can drape over your piggies’ cage, along with a water bottle; They will have communal pens for boys and for girls, but you should also bring a solo enclosure in case your pig gets too stressed out or is ill; all pigs must undergo a health check prior to being let into the communal pens; and naughty pigs will be removed from communal pens. Admission is $5 per person, which goes toward guinea pig rescue.

Maker Saturdays! It's the final Maker Saturday as the summer series wraps up this weekend at the Bel Air Center in Greenbrae. Before saying goodbye, make one of the many projects on hand at the free drop in event presented by Marin Maker Mobile. Maker Saturdays runs from noon to 3 p.m.

Origami-Palooza! This Japantown event is billed as San Francisco's Only Paper Party, but we haven't verified that. The inaugural Origami-Palooza will feature an exhibit with amazing origami, lots of tables with instructors to show new folds for all ages, a table dedicated to folding Paper Cranes for the World Tree of Hope in City Hall over the holidays and contests. In addition, there will be a Paper Airplane Challenge awarding prizes for best paper airplanes based on style and flight in age categories under 8 years old, ages 8-13 years and ages 14 – 100. The free event is this Sunday from 1 - 5 p.m.
