California Coastal Cleanup Day! This Saturday is the annual day to give back some love to our local beaches. Many coastal cleanup events are happening on Saturday - not all are on the coast, some events are at parks - with myriad opportunities to participate. A link to each of the 289 greater-Bay Area cleanup events can be found here. Some events have an activity including, like the post-cleanup BBQ at the Bay Model in Sausalito.
Mollusks of Lake Merritt! Get a close look at the hidden residents of Lake Merritt in Oakland this Saturday from 2-4 p.m., as the California Center for Natural History hosts a beneath the lake's surface at invertebrates. The proximity to the port means the lake is full of organisms found around the world. Participants can expect to see sea squirts, polychaetes, sponges, mollusks, and bivalves. The event is free, but donations of $5-10 are appreciated. Please rsvp in advance.
Creepy crawly tarantula hike! This is prime time for tarantulas as they come out of hiding to look for mates. The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is hosting two-mile, naturalist-led hikes along the north face of Mt. Diablo to explore the habitat of local tarantulas each Sunday through the end of October. The hikes are family-friendly, run from 4-6 p.m., and cost $10/member and $15/nonmember.
Biohackings! *Please note: this event is for those high school age and up with basic molecular biology skills.* This Sunday, explore protein purification of the enzyme Taq polymerase. Participants will learn and perform heat and chemical precipitated protein purification of the Taq polymeras. Each participant will receive a strain of E. coli to take home for their own Taq expression and will be able to keep whatever enzyme they purify. The biohacking event is this Sunday at BioCurious in Sunnyvale and cost is $50 per participant.
Walk the plank! Or pretend to, at least. Curiosity Hacked Oakland Lab will have some pirate-themed projects on hand, in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day. Make your own faux shrunken head, air cannons, and more from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday. The cost varies based on projects.
